TAWA Annual Intercultural Friendship and Dialog Dinner: September 16, 2010 PDF Print E-mail

The Turkish American Women Association (TAWA) is proud to announce that it will be having its annual Intercultural Friendship and Dialog Dinner on September 16.  The guest speakers of the event will be Elizabeth G. Thornburg, Professor of Law, Southern Methodist University, Becky Miller, Former Carrollton Mayor and an Institute of Interfaith Dialog (IID) representative. Following the speeches a delicious dinner will be served.
Please join us for this event if you are interested in diversity, friendship, mutual understanding and dialog. The event is free and open to everybody.

Lunch with Children's Medical Center Representatives PDF Print E-mail

TAWA volunteers hosted Children's Medical Center representatives at lunch. Turkish American Women Association made a donation to the Children's Medical Center of Dallas Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders on April 15, 2009. Money was raised by selling foods prepared by TAWA’s volunteers at the Turkish Food Sale event at the Southern Methodist University In November, 2008.

 
May Luncheon: "Mothers Day" PDF Print E-mail

The May luncheon program was held on Saturday, May 15th. We had an informative and highly motivated talk given by Betul Tarim and a special celebration for Mothers. The main theme of the talk was "Balance in Life" and how we can achieve balance in our daily lives regarding every aspect of it, including spending our money, time management and our personal and social relationships.

May Cofffee Night PDF Print E-mail

TAWA organized the last Coffee Night of the semester on May 13th. The guest speaker of the night was Catherine Bowles who gave a brief presentation about Folk Music.   She played some of the unforgettable songs of country and folk music and also shared some of her own songs with us which were absolutely a feast for the ears.

Bake Sale at SMU PDF Print E-mail

TAWA sponsored the Bake Sale event at SMU University which was organized by Turkish Student Association (TSA) of SMU. It was an all-day event on April 23th where people in the campus enjoyed delicious, homemade Turkish food. Some were happy to try something different for their lunch, and some were happy to get a to-go dinner for their loved ones. Baklava and sarma (grape leaves stuffed with rice and spices) were always must-haves in their choices.

All proceeds made during the day will be donated to "Women's Shelter". We give our special thanks to everybody that has been involved in this effort, those who cooked, those who sold and those who bought.

Cooking Class Session # 8 PDF Print E-mail

TAWA organized the last session of Spring 2010 Turkish Cooking Classes on April 18th. We had a great  afternoon playing a  game on remembering the ingredients of select dishes, in which Althea was the winner, presenting a lovely movie of the  pictures from previous classes and of course enjoying special Turkish dishes. We will be delighted to see everybody in the next  semester!!!

TAWA attended "The Annual Turkish Cooking Classes Competition", which was held in Houston. Our representative was Melanie  Cottam who was selected to be the third among eight participants from different cities of Texas. Congratulations Melanie! We  are all very proud of you!!

TAWA March Luncheon: "Power of Networking" PDF Print E-mail

The ladies luncheon of this month was held on Saturday, March 13 at the Turquoise Center. Kim Smith from Texas Instruments was our guest speaker for the luncheon forum. She talked about "Power of Networking" and gave important details and tips about being a successful network weaver. We appreciate her informative presentation and give our sincere thanks for her time and for being our guest speaker despite her busy schedule.

TAWA and UNT Professor’s Discussed Importance of Education PDF Print E-mail

TAWA had the opportunity to host the ladies from the University of North Texas (UNT) at the Turquoise Center. The attendees were the Director of Women’s Studies, Dr. Sandra Spencer, the Director of Intensive English Learning Institute (IELI), Eva Bowman, the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Jean Schaake, and Assistant Vice Provost of International Education, Saleha Suleman. TAWA’s purpose for hosting these esteemed intellectuals was to discuss the significance of education for women.

February Coffee Night PDF Print E-mail

TAWA had February Coffee Night on Feb 18. Harmony Science Academy student Fatma Sahin gave a brief presentation about "Board games in the world throughout the history ".

Following the presentation there was a small cooking competition where guests competed to make Turkish potato salad. Winners with the best taste and look won small gifts. Guests enjoyed salads and other delicious food along with nice conversations. Then they had fun dancing with musical chairs game and playing Taboo.

 Dallas County Commissioner Maurine Dickey was guest speaker of the January Luncheon which was held on January 30th. Commissioner Dickey made a presentation about the PDI (Prostitution Diversion Initiative) program and her involvement in the program.
