TAWA visited Dr. Elba Garcia, Commissioner for Dallas County District 4. We congratulated and wished her good luck in her new position. She gave us information about three priorities she is working on.

The first issue is economic development. She said the property taxes have not dropped as much as projected which is good news for their funding. She mentioned that she visited a food bank and saw the demand for food banks nearly doubled and the people are struggling with economic problems.

The second issue she is working on is public health. She mentioned about the changes and developments regarding the Parkland Hospital. She told us about how a new board was chosen and they are looking for a new CEO for the hospital to overcome current problems and oversee the expansion of the hospital. Also she mentioned that it is scary that HIV virus among 13-20 years old is rising in Dallas County. She said they provide free screening for HIV and more work needs to be done to educate people in this area.

The third issue she is working on is public safety. She mentioned how she communicates with different enforcement agencies such as police department, fire department to improve public safety.

We invited her and her colleagues for a cultural and business trip to Turkey for this coming summer.

It was a nice and friendly meeting and we wish to see her in our events again.
