January Coffee Night PDF Print E-mail

TAWA organized January Coffee Night at the Turquoise Center on January 21st. The programme started with a short presentation of Turkish Wedding Customs by Esra Akbay, a PhD Candidate at UTSouthwestern Medical Center.

Delicious Turkish Cuisine was enjoyed right after the presentation. It was followed by an actual "Henna Night" for three future brides; Jenny, Sewinch and Esmar.

UNT Women's Studies' Luncheon for TAWA PDF Print E-mail
TAWA was invited for luncheon at the University of North Texas by the director of Women’s Studies, Dr. Sandra Spencer. The director of Intensive English Learning Institute (IELI) Eva Bowman, the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Jean Schaake, Assistant Vice Provost of International Education Saleha Suleman and TURANT’s web designer UNT PhD candidate Oyku Isik joined the luncheon with the TAWA volunteers.

TAWA held its December Ladies' Luncheon on December 12. The guest speakers of the event were Jenny Jopling from UT Arlington and Dr. Gail Weatherly from Stephen F. Austin State University. Their presentation was about "Distance Education for Women".

Turkish Cooking Classes Session # 6 PDF Print E-mail

[IMG_0027.JPG] Last session of Turkish Cooking classes was last Saturday, December 5th. We had a very exciting "Sarma Competition". All participants were very good at making sarma's, however, who could make as many and as beautiful rolls in 5 minutes was the winner.

TAWA visited Dallas County Commisioner, Maurine Dickey PDF Print E-mail

TAWA visitied Dallas County Commisioner, Maurine Dickey, at her office on November 19. Outreach Directors Cemile Kumas and Ayse Ozgun introduced TAWA and talked about its mission, outreach activities and cultural interaction events. Mrs. Dickey, who is founding member of many organizations and agencies also actively participates in social events to make Dallas a better place. She was very interested in TAWA activities and told that she would be glad to be a guest speaker in one of our luncheons.

 
TAWA visited the elderly at Thanksgiving PDF Print E-mail

Turkish American Women Association visited the nursing home Gardens of Richardson on Thanksgiving Day.Early in the morning, volunteers celebrated Thanksgiving of every single resident at the nursing home and talked with them. The residents shared their memories about their families who were away.

Cooking Class Session # 5 PDF Print E-mail
Our fifth session of Turkish Cooking Classes was on November 21st. We had a great time learning Winter Salad, Rice with Almonds, Baked Trout Fish and Rolled Baklava.
In the mean time, we introduced some new Turkish words especially the words for the dishes of the menu. We had a lot of fun learning the correct pronunciations of words.

"SIRA GECESI" theme at November Coffee Night PDF Print E-mail

TAWA organized November Coffee Night at the Turquoise Center on November 16. A 14th century originated friends get together tradition, SIRA GECESI, was introduced by Hacer Sahin, a young volunteer of TAWA.

Cooking Class Session # 4 PDF Print E-mail

[IMG_2521.jpg] TAWA organized the fourth session of Cooking Classes for Fall 2009 this Saturday, November 7th. We had a great time learning Shepherd's Salad, Sarma (Stuffed Grape leaves), Roasted chicken with Mushrooms and Pyramid Cake. Students had the chance to learn rolling Sarmas individually and get prepared for the upcoming "Making Best Sarma" competition on December 5th. Roasted Chicken with Mushrooms was delicious and everybody loved how easy and how tasty Tea Biscuit Cake could be!
