Azerbaijani cooks

Third session of Cooking Classes was this Saturday, October 24th. We had three Azerbaijani cooks, Sevinc, Asmar and Parvina. Not only they taught how to cook four delicious Azerbaijani dishes, they also danced and sang for us. We had a lovely afternoon enjoying new taste of freshly cooked dishes and also had the pleasure of meeting new Cooking Class students. If you have missed this class, do not worry! RSVP for our next class on November 7th.

October Coffee Night PDF Print E-mail

 

TAWA organized October Coffee Night in Turquoise Center on October 19. Abigail Aguirre, a young volunteer, presented her homeland, Mexico. She firstly talked about the geography, attaching the races and the tribes leaved in this geography throughout the history. She also compared today’s community with the ones lived there before. Furthermore, she gave information on the present status of Mexico in terms of population, religion and economy, from which all guests had a broad sense of today's Mexico.

TAWA hosted Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano PDF Print E-mail

TAWA held its October Ladies' Luncheon on October 3. The guest speaker of the event was Pauline Medrano, Deputy Mayor Pro Tem for Dallas City Council District 2. Her presentation was about "2010 Census". She talked about the importance of participating in the census, and how it will affect the budget of local the districts for the following years. She emphasized the importance of informing the local communities about the census in order to promote participation. She further mentioned where these communities can get help regarding the census. Following the speech the guests enjoyed the delicious lunch prepared by the TAWA ladies.

SMU IDSA Interfaith Talk PDF Print E-mail
                                             
SMU Interfaith Dialogue Student Association (IDSA) has started the Interfaith Talk Series on September 25.  The guest speaker of this first talk was Dr Qudsia Mirza, Professor of Law and the subject was  “Future of Islamic Feminism”.  The basis of Islamic Feminism, the rights of women in Islamic countries in the past and today and the academic studies about this subject were discussed. Dr. Mirza emphasized that the Islamic feminism is not a movement to give new rights to the women of Muslim world; it is actually going back to the purity of Islamic law and reinserting the women rights that is already established in Quran and Sunna.  This first talk has attracted the attention of the many Southern Methodist University students and faculty. IDSA advisor Glen Linden, Professor of History, said that the SMU IDSA is very successful in organizing this event, and we will see more Interfaith Dialogue Student Association activities in future.

TAWA held September Coffee Night in Turquoise Cultural Center on September, 21 2009 which was the second day of the Ramadan festival.  Aysh Munife Koca presented this festival of Muslims called "Ramadan Bayrami" in terms of the reason for such a celebration after a whole month of fasting, traditional routines for this festival, and spiritual effects of Ramadan on Muslims.

TAWA Intercultural Friendship and Dialog Dinner PDF Print E-mail

Turkish American Women Association in collaboration with The Gulen Institute and Institute of Interfaith Dialog was held the first Intercultural Friendship and Dialog Dinner on August 27, 2009 at the Turquoise Center. TAWA president gave a presentation about the past activities and future plans of TAWA. Dallas Islamic Center (DIC) member Bilal Sabit introduced their activities and then recite the Athan-Call to prayer before the dinner. Dallas Sheriff Lupe Valdez and Ellen Pryor-Associate Provost of SMU, gave brief talk about their Turkey Trip experiences with Institute of Interfaith Dialog. Finally, as a represantative of IID and Gulen Institute, Dr. Alp Yaradanakul infomed guests about their activities. TAWA thanks to all of the participants. On May 21, 2009 TAWA had luncheon with Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO). PEO’s mission is: promoting educational opportunities for women. TAWA and PEO have a great understanding of women’s role in the society and the importance of education for women. TAWA President Ipek Isikli and Outreach Director Dr. Yasemin Alptekinoglu had an opportunity to meet with 2008 All Round Olympic Champion, Nastia Liukin, and her mother Anna Liukin. Mother's Day Celebration Dinner PDF Print E-mail

TAWA had Mother's Day Celebration Dinner and Award Ceremony which was held on May 10, 2009. Ayse Ozgun-TAWA outreach director- presented the program. Ipek Isikli-TAWA president- gave the awards to the mothers who were nominated by TAWA volunteers. Patricia Capelli shared with us an emotional poem which is written by her daughter.
